The 2026 Quant Compensation Benchmark — London, New York, Singapore

Salary and P&L share data for researchers, PMs and quant developers across multi-strats, single-managers and prop firms.

Based on live mandate data from Platinum & Partners across 2025–2026. This is not a survey — it is drawn directly from active searches and recent placements.

Quantitative Researchers

The researcher market in 2026 is bifurcated: tier-1 multi-strats continue to pay at the top of the market, while specialist single-manager funds offer more carried interest and greater research autonomy at lower guaranteed comp.

Junior (PhD entry, 0–2 years): £80k–£130k base, £40k–£90k bonus. Year-one guarantees common for PhD hires from top-tier programmes. Signing bonuses of £25k–£75k typical at tier-1 multi-strats.

Mid-level (2–4 years, live alpha contribution): £130k–£220k base, £80k–£200k bonus. Researchers with demonstrable alpha contribution command a significant premium over those with only academic or sell-side backgrounds.

Senior (4–8 years, lead researcher): £220k–£400k base, £200k–£600k+ bonus. Access to carry or co-investment typically begins at this level.

Lead / Principal (8+ years, strategy ownership): £350k–£700k base, £500k–£2M+ total. At single-manager funds, carry can dominate total compensation.

New York runs 15–25% above London equivalents. Singapore and Hong Kong typically 10–20% below London base, though after tax the gap narrows considerably.

Systematic Portfolio Managers

The PM market is driven almost entirely by live track record quality and Sharpe ratio.

Emerging PM (1–2 year live track record): £150k–£250k base, 10–15% net P&L share, year-one guarantee of £200k–£400k typical, allocation of $25M–$100M. The guarantee is the critical negotiating variable for emerging PMs.

Established PM (2–5 year track, Sharpe 1.5+): £200k–£350k base, 15–20% net P&L, allocation of $100M–$500M+. Multi-strats compete aggressively for PMs with a 3+ year track showing capacity to scale.

Senior PM (5–10 year track, $500M+ allocation): £300k–£600k base, 20–25% net P&L, potential co-investment rights, total compensation £1M–£5M+ in good years.

Note: the percentage figures are net of costs charged to the pod — typically 5–8% of gross AUM per annum for multi-strat platforms. Understanding the true all-in cost structure is essential before accepting P&L share terms.

Quant Developers & Engineers

Quant developer compensation has increased materially in the past three years, driven by the expansion of multi-strat platforms and increasing demand for infrastructure engineers.

Junior (1–3 years): £70k–£130k base, £20k–£50k bonus. KDB+/q and low-latency C++ command a premium even at junior level.

Mid-level (3–6 years): £130k–£220k base, £50k–£150k bonus. C++ developers with demonstrable low-latency experience sit at the top of this band.

Senior (6+ years, hedge fund): £200k–£400k+ base, £150k–£400k bonus. Total compensation at top systematic hedge funds typically 1.5–2.5x base.

Contract: KDB+/q £900–1,800/day London, $1,200–2,300/day NYC. Low-latency C++ £900–1,800/day London. Python quant dev £700–1,300/day. Outside IR35 typically 15–20% higher.

Key Trends in 2026

KDB engineers commanding a premium. The shortage of production KDB+/q talent has pushed rates to historic highs. Firms cannot simply retrain — the q language has a steep learning curve and fund-specific depth takes years.

Guarantee inflation for PMs. Multi-strats continue to compete for live-track PMs with increasingly generous year-one guarantees. We have seen £600k–£800k guarantees offered to emerging PMs at platforms hungry for capacity.

Contract-to-perm as a hiring strategy. A growing number of funds are using 6–12 month contracts as a probationary mechanism before committing to permanent headcount, particularly for platform-build engineering roles.

Crypto premium normalising. The crypto-adjacent quant premium of 2021–2023 has largely normalised. Systematic crypto PMs and researchers now command a 10–20% premium over equivalent roles at traditional asset managers.
